This course provides practical, real-world knowledge to help learners prevent, detect, and respond effectively to Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in cattle and other susceptible livestock. The focus is on actionable biosecurity practices that can be applied immediately on farms of all sizes to protect animal health, livelihoods, and market access. Learners will gain a clear understanding of how FMD spreads, how to recognise early warning signs, and which high-risk activities such as animal movement, auctions, transport, and shared equipment increase the risk of outbreaks. The course covers effective farm biosecurity measures, including controlled access, disinfection, worker hygiene, quarantine, and responsible animal-movement practices. Guidance is also provided on how to respond correctly to a suspected FMD case, including isolation, reporting, and compliance with government control measures and legal requirements. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to reduce the risk of FMD entering their operation, limit disease spread if an outbreak occurs, and implement a practical, long-term biosecurity approach to protect their livestock and livelihood.
